Monsoon Afternoon

·

,

Outside my window,
Rain drops squeal with glee
As they freefall

Towards school boys
Making paper boats
To race through muddy puddles

Towards the sleeping rickshawala
Now charging “double meter”
Because it’s hard to bargain, with rain in your eyes.

Towards the maid rushing to rescue
Laundry on the clothesline
From the clutches of pastel crocodile clips

Towards trees and car wipers swaying violently,
Street vendors scurrying back into the shadows,
The crowd at the chai stall swelling,
Wet chappals squeaking on tiled floors

Inside my window,
Wrapped in each other,
We’re oblivious to the rain

Maybe it’s because
We are already drenched.
